What hazardous area lighting do I need?

The lighting you need depends on your area’s zone classification, which is set by how often a flammable gas, vapour or dust atmosphere is present. Gas and vapour areas are graded Zone 0, 1 or 2, and dust areas Zone 20, 21 or 22. Each zone requires a matching category of certified fitting, along with the right gas group and temperature class for the substances on site. If you are unsure of your classification, our team can help match certified ATEX and IECEx fittings to your area as part of a free lighting design.

What hazardous area lighting fixtures are there?

The main hazardous area fixtures are explosion-proof battens for general and linear lighting, explosion-proof high bays for tall spaces such as process halls and stores, and explosion-proof floodlights for yards, tank farms and building exteriors. All are sealed, robustly built and carry ATEX and IECEx certification. We supply battens from 2ft to 5ft, high bays up to 200W and floodlights up to 200W, in Zone 1 and Zone 2 rated options.

What lighting is best used for zone 1 hazardous areas?

Zone 1 areas, where a flammable atmosphere is likely during normal operation, need fittings certified specifically for Zone 1. Our Nexis and Zenith explosion-proof LED battens are Zone 1 rated, covering both gas and dust (Zone 21 and 22) atmospheres, and are ideal for refineries, tank farms and chemical stores. The correct fitting also depends on the gas group and temperature class for your site, which we can confirm for you.

What lighting is best used for zone 2 hazardous areas?

Zone 2 areas, where a flammable atmosphere is unlikely and only present briefly if at all, can use fittings certified for Zone 2. Our Titan explosion-proof LED high bay is Zone 2 rated, with Zone 21 and 22 for dust, and suits process areas, workshops and stores. Our explosion-proof high bays and floodlights are also rated for Zone 1 and Zone 2 use, so we can match the right fitting to your classification.

What is the lifespan of lighting in hazardous areas?

Quality explosion-proof LED fittings typically last 50,000 hours or more, giving well over a decade of use before output drops significantly. This is a major benefit in hazardous areas, where access for maintenance is often restricted, permit-controlled or requires a shutdown. Fewer changes mean lower cost, less downtime and reduced risk to personnel.

What are the benefits of LED lighting for hazardous areas?

LED brings the same efficiency and long life to hazardous areas as anywhere else, using far less energy than older fittings and lasting much longer, which is especially valuable where maintenance access is difficult. LED also runs cooler, reaches full brightness instantly, and offers better light quality for safe working. Combined with a sealed, certified explosion-proof housing, you get compliant lighting that is cheaper to run and maintain.

Can you get dimmable lighting for hazardous areas?

Yes, dimmable and controllable options are available for certain explosion-proof fittings, though any controls in a hazardous area must themselves be suitable for the zone and correctly certified. Dimming and sensor control can cut energy use further, but the setup needs careful specification to stay compliant.
