What is explosion proof lighting?

In hazardous areas, lighting must never become an ignition source. Explosion proof lights are specifically designed to contain any internal sparks or heat, preventing them from interacting with the volatile atmosphere.

Difference between ATEX & IECEx zone classifications

Zone 1 & 2 (Gas/Vapour): Ideal for petrochemical plants and fuel storage areas where explosive gases may occur during normal operations or due to accidental leaks.

Zone 21 & 22 (Dust): Essential for grain mills, wood processing facilities, and pharmaceutical laboratories where combustible dust clouds pose significant risks.

Are LED lights considered explosion proof?

Not by default. Standard LED lights are not explosion proof and must be specifically designed and certified for hazardous areas. Our explosion proof LED lights are built with sealed, robust housings and carry ATEX and IECEx certification for use in these environments.

How can I tell if a light is explosion proof?

Check for ATEX or IECEx certification markings, along with the relevant zone and temperature class ratings printed on the fixture or its datasheet. All of our explosion proof LED lights clearly display these ratings so you can confirm suitability for your specific hazardous area.

Do LEDs get hot enough to start a fire?

LEDs run far cooler than traditional bulbs, but in a hazardous atmosphere even small amounts of heat or a stray spark can pose a risk. That is why our explosion proof LED lights are engineered to contain any heat or ignition source within a sealed housing.

How many explosion proof lights do I need?

The number depends on your space size, ceiling height, required lux levels and the hazardous zone classification. We can help with a lighting design to calculate exactly how many explosion proof LED lights your layout needs, though we do not carry out installation.

Do explosion proof lights still get hot?

Yes, they generate some heat, but explosion proof LED lights run cooler than older technologies and are rated to a safe surface temperature class. Their sealed design keeps any heat contained and below the ignition point of surrounding gases or dust.

How much does explosion proof lighting cost?

Costs vary with fixture type, wattage, certification level and the number of units required, so explosion proof LED lights typically sit above standard fittings due to their specialist construction.
