BS EN 12464-1 (Light and lighting of workplaces, indoor). Colour-critical inspection areas benefit from a higher colour rendering index of 80 to 90 or above and a cooler colour temperature. The best factory lighting is usually LED high bay fittings for the main production floor, paired with low bays or battens for lower-ceiling and ancillary areas, and IP-rated tri-proof fittings for wash-down or damp zones. Premium fittings with high efficiency, up to 200lm/W, sensor readiness and a 5000K output give bright, even light for safe, productive work. The right choice depends on your ceiling height, the tasks carried out and the environment, which is why we design every factory scheme individually.
Quality LED factory fittings typically last 50,000 to 100,000 hours, which for most sites means 10 years or more of use before output drops significantly. That is far longer than the metal halide or fluorescent fittings they replace, which often needed changing every year or two. Yes, LED high bay fittings are designed specifically for high ceilings, typically above 6 metres, and are available with different beam angles to suit the mounting height and floor layout. Higher ceilings usually call for higher-output fittings and narrower beams to keep light even at floor level. We calculate the right wattage, beam angle and spacing for your ceiling height as part of the free design.
Under BS EN 12464-1, general assembly and production areas need around 300 lux, rising to 500 to 750 lux for fine assembly and inspection, and higher again for precision or colour-critical work. Storage areas need around 100 to 150 lux, and packing and dispatch around 300 lux. We confirm the right level for each area as part of your design.
