Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about investing in industrial LED lighting for your facility.

What are common outdoor LED lighting mistakes?

The most common mistakes are choosing fittings with too low an IP rating for the location, over-lighting an area so it causes glare and light spill onto neighbours, and picking the wrong colour temperature, which can make a space feel harsh. Others include poor positioning that leaves dark spots, ignoring controls such as sensors or timers that would save energy, and buying low-quality fittings that fail early outdoors. A proper design avoids all of these, and our team can help you get it right.

What is the lifespan for external lighting?

Quality external LED fittings typically last 50,000 hours or more, which for most installations means well over a decade of use before output drops significantly. Weatherproofing matters just as much as the LED itself, so a well-sealed IP65 or higher fitting will hold up far better outdoors than a poorly rated one. Longer life means fewer replacements and less access equipment, which is a real saving on tall columns and hard-to-reach facades.

How to choose the right outdoor LED lights?

Start with the job the light needs to do, whether that is security, wayfinding, access or highlighting a building, then match the fitting type to it. Check the IP rating suits the location, IP65 or higher for exposed areas, choose a colour temperature that fits the setting, usually 3000K to 4000K, and size the output in lumens to the area. Add controls such as PIR sensors, photocells or timers to cut running costs. If you are unsure, our free lighting design will specify the right fittings and positions.

Do I need an electrician to replace external lighting?

For hardwired external lighting, yes. In England and Wales, outdoor electrical work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so it should be carried out by a qualified electrician or notified to building control. A professional install also makes sure fittings are correctly weatherproofed and earthed, which matters a great deal outdoors. We supply the fittings and can advise on specification, though we do not carry out installation.

Do I need planning permission to install external lighting?

In many cases no, as external lighting on most commercial and domestic property falls under permitted development. However, permission or extra care may be needed if the building is listed, in a conservation area or national park, or if the lighting could cause light pollution or nuisance to neighbours, wildlife or road users. Larger commercial schemes and street lighting can carry their own requirements. We always recommend checking with your local planning authority before a major installation.

What are the benefits of LED lighting for external areas?

LED external lighting uses far less energy than older halogen or sodium fittings, often cutting costs by up to 80%, and lasts much longer, which is a big advantage on hard-to-access columns and facades. It gives instant, bright, even light for safety and security, works well with sensors and timers, and comes in weatherproof IP65 and higher housings built for UK conditions. Better light also improves CCTV clarity and helps deter intruders.
