What is a microwave bulkhead light?

A microwave bulkhead light is a sealed, surface-mounted fitting that uses a microwave sensor to detect motion and activate the LED automatically. We supply versions with emergency battery backup, so the light also provides illumination during a mains power failure.

Do microwave bulkhead lights consume less energy than those without a sensor?

Yes, because the microwave sensor only powers the LED when movement is detected, cutting runtime in low-traffic areas. Across stairwells, corridors and plant rooms, this can significantly reduce energy use compared with constantly running fittings.

What is the installation process for LED microwave bulkhead lights?

LED microwave bulkhead lights are surface-mounted and wired to the mains by a qualified electrician, with sensor sensitivity and timing set during commissioning. We supply the products and design guidance, but do not carry out installation ourselves.

How long do LED microwave bulkhead lights last?

Most LED microwave bulkhead lights last between 50,000 and 70,000 hours, equating to many years of typical commercial use. Emergency variants also include a backup battery that is usually rated for replacement every three to five years.

Do microwave bulkhead lights require much maintenance?

No, microwave bulkhead lights are low-maintenance thanks to sealed LED construction with no bulbs to replace. Emergency models only need a periodic function test of the backup battery to stay compliant.

What is the difference between microwave sensors and PIR sensors?

A microwave sensor detects motion using high-frequency radio waves and can sense movement through thin covers and around obstacles, while a PIR sensor detects body heat and needs a direct line of sight. Microwave sensors are generally more sensitive over larger areas, making them well-suited to bulkhead fittings in bigger commercial spaces.
