Common questions
Everything you need to know about investing in industrial LED lighting for your facility.
UK sports lighting follows BS EN 12193, the European standard for sports lighting, alongside Sport England guidance and the requirements of individual governing bodies such as the FA, the LTA and the England and Wales Cricket Board. These set the maintained lux levels, uniformity, glare limits and colour rendering for each class of play, from recreational through club competition to professional and broadcast. Our designs are produced to meet the relevant standard for your sport and level.
The main types are floodlights for outdoor pitches and stadiums, court lights for tennis, padel and multi-use courts, high bay and low-glare fittings for indoor sports halls, and portable pitch lights for training grounds. The right type depends on whether your facility is indoor or outdoor, the sport played and the standard of competition. We supply all of these and can advise on the best fit.
Quality LED sports floodlights typically last 50,000 hours or more, which for most clubs means well over a decade of regular use before output drops significantly. That is far longer than the metal halide lamps they replace, which often needed changing every few years. Longer life means fewer costly access visits to tall masts and lower lifetime maintenance.
Our highest-output sports floodlights reach well over 1,600W per fixture and produce several hundred thousand lumens each, suitable for large stadiums and broadcast-standard pitches. Brightness at the pitch is measured in lux, ranging from around 75 lux for recreational training up to 2,000 lux for televised matches. The output you need is set by your sport and level of play, not simply the biggest fixture available.
This depends on your sport, whether you play indoors or outdoors, your competition standard and any broadcast requirements. A grassroots training pitch has very different needs from a county cricket ground or a professional stadium. The simplest way to find out is our free lighting design, which calculates the fixtures, positions and light levels for your specific facility.
The best choice is LED floodlighting with asymmetric optics, mounted on columns or masts and designed to deliver even light across the playing area while controlling glare and spill. Premium LEDs from makers such as CREE, OSRAM and Philips give the output, colour quality and lifespan needed for sport. The exact specification comes from a photometric design based on your pitch size and level of play.
It varies by sport and standard. As a guide, recreational play starts at around 75 to 200 lux, club competition sits at 200 to 500 lux, and national or professional play needs 500 to 750 lux or more, with televised events higher again. Each sport’s governing body sets its own figures. We confirm the right level for your facility as part of the design.
Yes. Send us your pitch, court or hall dimensions and our team will produce a free lighting design, including fixture positions, wattages and predicted lux levels, so you know exactly what you need before ordering. It is the best way to get an accurate specification and quote for your project.
