Do you need an electrician to install LED downlights?

Yes, LED downlights should be installed by a qualified electrician to ensure safe and compliant wiring. We supply the fittings and can help with layout design, but we do not carry out installation.

How long do LED downlights last?

Most LED downlights last between 25,000 and 50,000 hours, which can mean over 15 years of typical commercial use. Lifespan depends on the quality of the fitting, the operating temperature and how often they are switched on and off.

How far apart should LED downlights be placed?

As a general rule, divide your ceiling height by two to find the ideal spacing in metres, so a 2.4m ceiling suggests fittings around 1.2m apart. The right spacing also depends on beam angle and the brightness level your space requires, which is where our layout design help is useful.

Do I need fire hoods for LED downlights?

You only need fire hoods if your downlights are not already fire-rated, as fire-rated LED downlights have built-in protection that maintains the ceiling’s fire integrity. Many of our fittings are fire-rated, removing the need for separate hoods.

Can I cover LED downlights with insulation?

Only if the fitting is specifically rated as insulation coverable (IC rated), otherwise covering them risks overheating and reduced lifespan. Always check the product specification before installing insulation over any downlight.

Are LED downlights dimmable?

Many of our LED downlights are dimmable, though you will need a compatible LED dimmer switch and driver for flicker-free performance. Always check the product specification, as not every model supports dimming.

Are all LED downlights fire-rated?

No, not all LED downlights are fire-rated, so it is important to check the specification for each fitting. We stock a wide selection of fire-rated LED downlights for use in ceilings where fire protection is required.

Can I replace halogen downlights with LED?

Yes, in most cases, you can replace halogen downlights with LED versions to cut energy use significantly while keeping similar light output. You may need to check the fitting size and confirm the existing transformer or driver is LED compatible.

Are LED downlights energy efficient?

Yes, LED downlights are highly energy efficient, typically using up to 90% less electricity than halogen equivalents for the same brightness. This makes them a cost-effective choice for commercial and industrial spaces where lighting runs for long hours.
