What Is Festoon Lighting?

Festoon lighting consists of strings of evenly spaced bulbs that are typically larger than fairy lights. These bulbs are strung along a cable to create a warm, inviting glow. The term “festoon” originates from the Latin word “festum,” which means “feast,” inspired by the tradition of hanging garlands at festive gatherings. Today, festoon lights are a popular choice for enhancing outdoor ambience in gardens, patios, cafés, and event venues.

Modern LED festoon lights combine the charm of traditional bulb garlands with improved energy efficiency, durability, and safety. They stay cool to the touch, consume less power, and last longer than incandescent bulbs.

How Many Festoon Lights Do I Need?

The number of festoon lights you need depends on the size of your space and the desired lighting effect. Consider both the length of the area and how bright or dense you want the lighting to be.

A good rule of thumb is to space the bulbs about 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart for a balanced, continuous glow. You can arrange the lights in various layouts, such as straight, zig-zag, V shape, or canopy, to add visual interest and complement the proportions of your space.

Many LED festoon lights are connectable, allowing you to link multiple sets together to cover larger areas. Just be sure to check the manufacturer’s maximum run length to ensure safe power management.

What Can You Hang Festoon Lights Off Of?

Festoon lights are incredibly versatile and can be secured to various structures. Common anchoring options include:

Pergolas, fences, or walls: Use hooks, wall plugs, or cable clips to secure the lights.

Trees or posts: Wrap or drape the lights for a relaxed, organic look.

Freestanding poles or shepherd’s hooks: Ideal for open areas without natural structures.

For longer runs or heavier cables, it’s a good idea to pre-install a tensioned support wire and hang the festoon lights from it. This helps prevent sagging and extends the lifespan of the cables.
